Annual Recap 2021

MESSAGE FROM EL PREZ

It’s been an honour to serve the parent community and the little humans whom we love above all else. After 4 years, 1 fire and 1 pandemic, I look forward to having some more bandwidth in the brain and contributing to the community in other ways (anyone here also believe that the back field could be transformed into an inspiring play area / forest / grassy field? Holler at me!).

Highlights

What I’m most proud of is setting a welcoming tone of fun and inclusion. What I learnt is that building community takes many hands ‘n hearts and it’s a fire that needs constant fuel. What I enjoyed most was when I or the PAC could help a parent or child in a time of great need. What was unexpected were the friendships I made along the way.

The meaning of community

My ideal parent community is one where a parent considers every child at the school as if that child was their own. That means, while we all prioritize the well-being of our own kids, we also accept the responsibility to ensure every kid in the community gets what they need to thrive during these formative years. I see the PAC as a mechanism to ensure all Van Horne kids have good books to read, computers that aren’t 10 years old, get to go on field trips, have a full belly at lunch and have teachers that get funding for cool projects that light up young minds.

The passing of the baton!

It is my great pleasure to pass the torch to one of the biggest hearts and contributors in our community. Allow me to be the first to officially introduce my successor, the unstoppable Frankie Wong!

Yours in community,

Gregg “El Prez / G$” Sayer
President / Chair (2017/2018 to 2020/21)
Van Horne PAC

A MESSAGE FROM THE NEW PRESIDENT!

It’s hard to believe that we are coming to the end of our second pandemic school year. Fear, anxiety, and uncertainty definitely filled our community. HOWEVER, seeing how our Van Horne family has pulled together and rallied each other to stay positive has filled me as a parent and as a PAC Executive with hope, love, and the drive to fight on.

“I give an expression of care every day to each child” – Fred Rogers, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood

Children are our future. The heart of our community. As a parent of 4 kids, I want nothing more than my children to grow up in a loving, strong, and supportive environment. I am honored to be voted as your PAC Chair next year and I commit myself to supporting our Van Horne community to the best of my ability. My family has been part of the Van Horne family for 7 years now and this Grasshopper has learned so much over the years, especially these past 4 years under the wonderful leadership and guidance of our esteemed El Prez, Gregg Sayer. I know I have very big shoes to fill and I will do my best to lead our community with love, support, understanding, inclusivity, transparency, and commitment. I know that I will succeed. I have an amazing Executive team to support me and also the support of the Van Horne parents. “Together We Flourish” and we definitely do!

Feel free to reach out to me for anything. Questions? Support? Want to head a community project? Want to join the PAC Executive team? Come talk to me. My door…Whatsapp is always on! (My husband keeps saying that my phone is surgically attached to my hands.)

Kindest Regards,
Frankie Wong
PAC Chair 2021-2022
